Special thanks to:
Andrew and Mechthild at 'The Byre' for making us feel so welcome and helping
us reduce the whisky lake.
Mimi, Kevan and Tom at Mark Angelo, especially Kevan for all your help. Duncan
Cowell at Sound Mastering.
If you want to blame anyone for this CD then you could point the finger at
Dorothy Cooper.
I happened to be reading a copy of ‘The Singer’ magazine and noticed
a jazz vocalist competition in the back pages and not really taking note of
all the text (especially the Jazz Diva bit), duly sent them a copy of a couple
of jazz standards l recorded earlier in the year. A few weeks later l received
a call saying that my entry had been accepted for THE MARION MONTGOMERY AWARDS
2002 and I was invited to sing at the Ventnor Jazz Divas Festival Isle of
Wight, with the house trio. Thanks to Steve Rose who helped me put together
a pad for the competition. Only when l arrived at Ventnor, was it apparent
that l was the only male singer. I was the ‘token bloke’ in an
all female Diva competition! Apart from the usual nerves and getting my finger
caught in my mic stand in between songs, l won a special award at the festival,
but far more important than that for me, was meeting some lovely people.
A heartfelt thank you to Dorothy Cooper and Laurie Holloway, who gave me the
lift l needed to take things further and l hope you accept 10% of all profits
from sales of this CD, for the Montgomery Holloway music trust.
Thanks to Jeff Clyne, Trevor Tomkins, Nick Weldon and Laurie Holloway, who
accompanied me at the competition. Thanks for your continued support.
Thanks to John Clack for taking excellent photos at Ventnor.
Dorothy introduced me to Malcolm Edmonstone, who has become a good friend
and colleague and also fundamental in the recording of this CD. The trio were
great fun to work with and are truly talented, each in their own right. I
had never met Julian and Ben before we flew up to Inverness to record at The
Byre Studios and what a swell time we all had. This CD was recorded live over
a four day period.
